Girl Scouts Labrea Matteson, Jayden Thomason, and Alison Freeman recently attended the Girl Scout’s National Convention in Salt Lake City.

Members of local Girl Scout Troop 2619 attended the organization’s 53rd National Convention last month in Salt Lake City, Utah.

“Discover, Connect, Take Action: Girls Change the World” was the theme of the two-day convention.

“It was a great learning experience for our girls,” said Troop Leader Dena Thomason. “We balanced it out with education workshops and sightseeing.”

Girl Scouts Jayden Thomason, Alison Freeman, and Labrea Matteson learned welding and leather work, met the women Harlem Globetrotters, and taste-tested the new gluten-free cookies the Girl Scouts will be selling in January.

It wasn’t all hard work for the young ladies. They rode in a pedicab, visited the famous Temple Square Garden, and attended a performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Thomason said a speech about Girl Scout founder Julliette Gordon Low was especially inspiring for the Troop.

Despite being deaf, Low started the leadership program that is now the largest educational organization for girls in the world.

“Low sends the message to help those around you and not be restricted to your own small circle of friends and family,” Thomason said. “Start something small and it could go worldwide!”

Troop 2619 raised money and had donations to pay for the convention trip, which was affordable because it was nearby. They raised $400 from car washes at Rent-a-Wheel.

“The trip was a once in a life time opportunity for our eclectic group,” Thomason said. “A heartfelt thanks goes out to all who helped them on their journey.”
