Taylor Goff finds an open shot during a scrimmage against Dolores on Nov. 22.

Last season, the Mancos High School girls basketball team finished with a 5-15 record. Since then, the Bluejays lost key seniors Emily Funmaker and Brandi Bundy to graduation and junior contributor Courtney Colyer to injury.

Despite their losses however, the Bluejays remain optimistic that this season could produce positive results as the team looks to improve on last season's record.

"I think we will compete pretty well," said second year head coach Mallory Morgan. "I think we can get into the District Tournament and maybe past it a little bit."

Guards key to success

To win on a consistent basis, the Bluejays will rely on sophomore point guard Jessica Gutierrez and senior shooting guard Taylor Goff to provide scoring and leadership.

While Gutierrez utilizes quickness to slash into the lane and distribute or score, Goff relies on strength and athleticism to put the ball in the basket.

"(Gutierrez) is a silent leader, and (Goff) can definitely score a lot," said Morgan. "Taylor is very intense, and she is going to have to step up."

On offense, Mancos will utilize a motion system and look to fast break whenever they can. On defense, the Bluejays will utilize man-to-man defense unless matchups dictate a switch to a zone.

"Our goal this year is to work on everything that we can and get our fundamentals down," said Gutierrez. "We're going to be a running team, so we need to get in shape."

Posts look to give stability

Seemingly thin at the post position, the Bluejays lean heavily on Nicole Hess, whose aggression underneath the basket could benefit the team. While Hess remains raw on the offensive end, the sophomore is capable of pulling down offensive and defensive rebounds.

Also looking to contribute on the low block will be sophomore Kaylee Rose, who showcased leaping ability and athleticism during the volleyball season. Still relatively inexperienced on the basketball court, Rose develop into a contributor for the Bluejays.

Tough matchups ahead

With several tough non-conference matchups and a spate of difficult league matchups as well, Mancos figures to be challenged from start to finish.

Highlighting the team's schedule will be a season-opening home matchup against Newcomb on Dec. 3 followed by a tough non-conference road game against Aztec on Dec. 9. The Bluejays open conference play on the road against Nucla on Dec. 12 and will play Dolores on Jan. 27 and Feb. 20.

"We want to stay positive and stay competitive," said Goff. "We want to encourage each other, run on every team we can and win."
