Thursday, Nov. 13
2:09 p.m. An officer was in a marked patrol vehicle in the 200 block of West 2nd when he observed a man he believed to have active warrants enter a home. The owner of the residence allowed the officer to come inside and after some searching, found a pair of boots sticking out from under some blankets on the bed. After ordering the man to show his hands several times, the man eventually did and it was determined the man did have warrants for his arrest. He was arrested and transported to the jail.
5:18 p.m. An officer responded to help another officer who was in a foot chase with a man running northbound on S. Market Street in Cortez. When the second officer arrived, the first officer pointed out a jacket and backpack that the running man had dropped. Before the man starting running, the first officer had told the running man that he knew he had active warrants, which is when the man took off running. The chase was eventually discontinued and the running man lost the officer, but the contents of the backpack were searched and a spoon with traces of methamphetamine was discovered inside.
6:48 p.m. Officers responded to the 500 block of Madison Street for a report of a disturbance. When the second officer arrived, he observed another officer fighting with a man on the ground as the officer was trying to put handcuffs on the man. The second officer told the man if he didn’t stop resisting arrest, he would be tased. The man was eventually handcuffed before being tased. Once handcuffed, the man continued to struggle and threaten the officers. Restraints were then placed on the man’s ankles. Beforehand, the man had allegedly been drinking and scared his common-law wife because he broke a window and gets violent when he is drunk, the woman said. There were children screaming and crying in the house, which is why the police were called. The man was issued summons for assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, criminal mischief and domestic violence.
Friday, Nov. 14
12:51 a.m. Officers responded to a report of a fight at the intersection of South Market Street and West Main Street. A large group of people were fighting in the middle of the street. Once the patrol car was observed the group disperses and one man began to run, in pursuit, the officer eventually caught the running person and discovered the man had a warrant out of La Plata County Sheriff’s Office. Once the running man was arrested, the other parties involved said the fight was mutual and did no want to press charges.
12:50 p.m. After hearing an Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately report for a vehicle westbound on East Main Street in Cortez, and then another one regarding the same vehicle causing a traffic accident near S. Beech and E. 1st Street, an officer finally located the vehicle parked on the south side of the post office. When the officer contacted the man in the white pickup, it was raining heavily outside and the man refused to get out of the pickup and would not roll down his window all the way. The man also would not turn off the pickup. Instead of doing as told, the man locked the vehicle. The man would not give the officer his licence, he would only hold it up against the glass of the window. That is when the man began reaching in other pockets and refused to keep his hands where the officer could see them. When the man refused to comply, the officer pulled his gun and other officers responded with their guns pulled. The man looked at the first officer and said, “Do you think that little 9mm is going to hurt me?” The first officer then pulled out his baton, thinking he would have to break the window and radioed for additional response. The man then pulled out a knife from his pocket. The man inside eventually put the knife away when told to do so by the officers with the guns and got out of the car. Officers could smell alcohol on the man’s breath and he failed roadside maneuvers. The man was then placed into custody and transported to jail and officers later learned that he had a felony warrant from Garfield County for possession of a weapon by a previous offender and his license had been canceled by the DMV.
Saturday, Nov. 15
1:27 a.m. An officer responded to a bar in the 200 block of N. Broadway for a report of a physical fight. When the officer arrived, he was told that a man who had been drinking got into a vehicle and the people inside did not know him and were trying to drag him out of their truck. The group said they didn’t want to take any action and the man said he just wanted to go home. Eventually, it was learned that the man had a warrant and he was arrested and taken to jail.
7:27 p.m. An officer responded to the 700 block of Stratton Drive for a report of an attempted burglary. A ex-boyfriend had apparently tried to enter a woman’s house carrying a laundry basket with some of her property in it. The basket was dumped in the street and the woman later said her tire had been slashed. The man was later located and issued a summons for criminal mischief.
Tuesday, Nov. 18
10:18 a.m. An officer responded to the new gas station at the 400 block of North State Street in reference to a theft. A young man reportedly took two breakfast sandwiches an left without paying for them. The boy was identified on surveillance video as a 16-year-old that attended a nearby school. When the boy was contacted, along with his parents, he was issued a summons for shoplifting. The manager of the store said that shoplifting has become a serious problem with the nearby school.
10:41 a.m. An officer was advised by dispatch that they received a call from the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office indicating that a man was visiting an inmate who had a warrant. The man was contacted at the jail and advised of his warrant, he was arrested left in the custody of the jail staff.
