After a solid career at Montezuma-Cortez High School, Hayden Plewe is taking his game to the next level.
The senior signed a national letter of intent to play golf at Southern Utah University on Nov. 14 and after serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter Day Saints, will begin competing in the fall of 2017.
“I’m super-excited, and I’m super-blessed,” said Plewe, who is the son of Todd and Monica Plewe. “I grew up with tons of support from the community, my parents and my coaches. It all came together, and I’m just amazed right now.”
Asked why he chose to sign with Southern Utah University, which is located in Cedar City, Utah, Plewe said that the school felt right.
“I went over there for an official visit with the coach,” said the high school senior. “I got to go to a football game and do an official campus tour. The coach, (Richard Church) spent a lot of time with me and he made me an offer. I was really excited because (Southern Utah) is Division One and I get to play at a really high level.”
Southern Utah University is a member of the Big Sky Conference and competes in tournaments throughout the western United States.
Plewe’s signing followed a prep career during which he played in the Colorado State Golf Tournament as a freshman, sophomore and senior. He was named to the West Slope League’s first-team all-conference team as a junior and senior and was named the top Class 4A golfer in the West Slope Region in 2014.
Plewe finished second in the 2014 West Slope Regional Tournament and tied for eighth at the Colorado State Tournament in 2014. The senior also led his high school teammates on and off the course.
“Hayden brought great leadership and a great attitude for us,” said M-CHS head coach Micah Rudosky. “Each year he got better, and that showed with his scores and how he played.”
