Giving Tree scheduled to go up Dec. 2

The Giving Tree is an anonymous, volunteer project that collects and distributes Christmas gifts to about 150 Mancos area residents each year. Now in its 17th year, Giving Tree is looking for more helpers and someone to join our team this year and in the future.

There are no age or income tests for the Mancos Giving Tree. Residents of Mancos Valley and students in the schools are welcome to apply. Look for applications at Mancos schools and churches starting Nov. 3. The Visitor Center also has application forms, as does Mancos Valley Bank. The Chamber of Commerce website (www.mancosvalley.com) has a copy posted.

Return the applications to the school office or nurse, to the Visitors Center, Mancos Valley Bank, or mail to P. O. Box 204, Mancos. Applications must be received by Wednesday, Nov. 26. The trees will be at the Mancos Library, the Columbine Bar, Mancos Valley Bank, Zuma, and The P&D Grocery after Thanksgiving. Once the trees and ornaments are up, the Christmas shopping begins.

Mancos Valley Resources, a local 501c3 nonprofit, is again acting as a pass-through agency for the Mancos Giving Tree. Donors who wish to make a charitable deduction for tax purposes may pass those gifts through MVR. Betsy Harrison is the MVR contact. Please make checks payable to Mancos GivingTree/MVR and mail to Box 204, Mancos 81328.

Please consider the Giving Tree for holiday and year end donations.

For more information, contact Jeanne Freed (882-1260) and Denise Rentz (739-6336).

Holiday Festival with Navajo Tacos in Cortez

A Holiday Festival will be held on Saturday, November 15, starting at 9 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church at 515 North Park Street in Cortez. A highlight of the day will be the serving of Navajo Tacos made with fresh frybread starting at 11 a.m. Baked goods, candy, needle craft, toys, holiday ornaments and decorations, as well as pie and coffee will be available all during the morning. Children will receive a free treat. There is no admission fee and all are welcome. This is a great way to get your Christmas shopping done and to “buy local.”

If you are a cookbook collector, please note that Kathy Rousset of Mancos and Jane Westgaard of Hesperus will be selling the new cookbook that members of the Marvel United Methodist Church have produced. The cookbook is a fundraiser for the renovation of the church. The Marvel community (south of Hesperus) is building a sanctuary and making renovations to their existing building as quickly as money will allow. The work is mainly by volunteers from the community. For more information please contact Pastor Bud Rousset at 970-769-4966.

The Holiday Festival is sponsored by the Cortez United Methodist Women. For more information, call Karen Bohn at 970-565-9273.

Students announce food, toy drives

Mancos High School Student Council and National Honor Society have decided to join forces this year for another wide scale food drive and Toy Drive. As you all may know, these organizations do not receive monetary payments for such events. These organizations strive to make the community better by raising funds and/or holding charitable donations.

The Mancos High School Student Council and National Honor Society are asking for small donations. We accept any nonperishable food. These organizations are also asking for any food donations that we may use to make a thanks giving meal with being that we have made a goal of sending out 10 baskets of a complete Thanksgiving meals for large families in our community who have financial problems. We are asking for anything you may find on a Thanksgiving table such as: turkey, ham, stuffing, cranberry sauce, or anything you can donate. The Food Drive officially started Nov. 5, 2014 and will end on Nov. 19.

Although, it is a month away, The Mancos High School Student Council and National Honor Society have decided to prepare for the toy drive early. We are asking for any donations of Christmas Wrapping paper. Please know that we receive hundreds of toys that we distribute to children of a certain area, and this year it is the Mancos Elementary School.
