Remembering my return from the Air Force

I left the Air Force in early 1969 and came back home to Mancos. I'm curious about what was going on in Mancos at that time.

Easter vacation started on Thursday of last week, and the Boy Scouts from Bear Creek, near Denver, came to Mancos for a week's stay. While here, they visited Mesa Verde, the match factory, plywood mill and the fish hatchery in Durango.

The annual Easter egg hunt sponsored by the VFW and Auxiliary will be held April 6 (Easter Sunday).Admission will be one hard-boiled, colored egg. Youngsters up through sixth grade are asked to participate.

Sgt. 1st Class and Mrs. Edward Smith are the parents of a son, Luke Edward.

The Mancos Times-Tribune is published every Thursday with Byron MvKelvie, managing editor, and Ellen Holston, news editor.

Clyde Stevenson will undergo major back surgery as the result of a back injury.

Time is running short to get your entries in for the Grange sewing contest.

Mrs. Tom Colbert, high school secretary, is home with the flu.

Funeral services were held Tuesday in the LDS church for Harriet Robinson Robb. She married Arlo Robb in November 1934. Her four children are Renee Mayer, Helen Thatcher, Bryant and Arlo (Robin).

Claude Reed along with other workers used equipment to rechannel the river away from the Mesa Verde Co. and Cooks Trustworthy south walls. The river has already washed back under the south side of the bridge for more than flour feet.

Five Mancos students have received degrees from Fort Lewis College. Receiving bachelor of arts degrees were Jo Anne Harral, Douglas Ross and Gale Greenlee. Receiving bachelor of science degrees were Alfred Bradshaw and Jerry Decker.

Ground work has begun on a new telephone dial building located at First Avenue and North Mesa.

Capt. Ruth Ann Cox (She later became a colonel) has received the Air Force Commendation medal. Captain Cox is a 1952 graduate of Mancos High.

Tech Sgt. Alva Starr has arrived for duty at Hickan AFB, Hawaii.

Delbert Coppinger is serving aboard the USS Kitty Hawk.

Wanda Goode is instructing members of the LDS church to dance various styles in preparation for the Dance Festival to be presented April 18 at the high school gym.

Mr. and Mrs. Dick Patrick are vacationing in Arizona. Dick was the publisher of the Mancos Times for many years and is presently living with his daughter Pam and her husband Del Coppinger.

No petitions have been filed for the Mancos School District board of directors. The directors who terms expire this year are John Paquin and Glen Huniston.

Several Mancos residents met at the Mancos Cafe Wednesday to have breakfast with Congressman Wayne Aspinall. He was his usual witty and informative self, and everyone enjoyed the morning.

September 1998

The new pastor of the First Baptist Church, Paul Wilson, was officially installed. He came to Mancos from Azlee, Texas.

Rev. Thomas Noeson returned to Mancos for a Day of Prayer. He was the pastor at St. Rita's from 1982-86.

October 1998

Grace Kennedy and Travis Koppenhafer were chosen homecoming queen and king.

The Mancos Valley Chamber of Commerce named Ann Humiston and Mike Fleming Citizens of the Year.

November 1998

The Absolute Bakery opened with Peter and Joan Brinda'mour in charge.

Ray Martinez was recovering from injuries sustained when he was hit by a car in Mancos.

December 1998

The Colorado Historical Society named Bauer Bank building owner and renovator, Charlie Mitchell, (who passed on later) as the 1998 recipient of the Stephen Hart Preservation Award.

The Mancos School District banned corporal punishment.

Mae Willden passed away at the age of 94.

January 1999

Local wainwright, Will Stone, (Will was recently elected to be a trustee on the town board) completed a pair of Concord stagecoaches that would be used to transport guests on a California ranch to a nearby restaurant.

Lance Koppenhafer, a graduate of Mancos High School, was awarded the Louis Mordell Memorial Buckle at the 9th annual Cowboy Classic in Pinedale, Wyo.

February 1999

Preparations were being made to restructure Mancos Family Medicine.

Russell and Fay Culp celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. (Before Russell recently passed away they were able to celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary.)

The Mancos Fire and Rescue was moving to the old Forest Service Ranger Station. Fire chief Lyle Cox stated, "The main reason is there's more room."
