It remains unknown if a Cortez woman jumped or fell from a 65-foot cliff near Battle Rock Charter School on Thursday.

Claiming she suffered back and leg pain and was having difficulty breathing, the 35-year-old initially told a sheriff’s deputy that she didn’t remember whether she jumped or fell. She later told authorities she had fallen, but law enforcement requested a psychiatric evaluation before her hospital release.

According to a sheriff’s office report, blood was evident on several areas of the cliff face. The woman’s boot and hat were found about 25 feet from where she landed.

After medical first responders requested a helicopter evacuation, traffic was stopped to create a landing pad. Air Care transported the woman to San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington.

Dispatchers received the call at 3:59 p.m. The sheriff’s office arrived on the scene at 11247 County Road G at 4:20 p.m.

According to the sheriff’s office, the woman resides within 400 feet of the school. Her medical condition wasn’t released.

She isn’t employed at Battle Rock school, according to its online list.
