Though Colorado Sen. Ellen Roberts, R-Durango, is assured of victory in her unchallenged bid for re-election, she deserves a vote of support. Roberts is a widely respected legislator in her party and by Democrats. Her service in the Colorado Legislature — in the House from 2006-2010 and in the Senate since 2010 — has been one of consistently championing her district’s needs. She has successfully shepherded a long list of measures into law or further discussion including bills expanding surface owners’ rights in negotiating how gas and oil development occurs on their land, requiring insurance companies to offer low-cost coverage for low-income Coloradans, and making consistent the radio frequencies over which fire fighters communicate during wildfires and improving the equipment available to them.
Roberts has been a steady advocate of reforming the state’s ballot initiative process so as to keep the Colorado Constitution less cluttered and conflicting. She has been a champion of protecting West Slope water, calling for critical conversations about how the Front Range can use its water more wisely before drawing from our side of the Continental Divide. In these and all of her legislative efforts, Roberts has been a studious representative of her constituents — seeking and listening to broad input and explaining clearly her votes. She stands by her actions with clear conviction.
