Tuesday, Sept. 9

8:09 a.m. New Wings School, 210 S. Washington St. in Cortez, reported vandalism. Several holes appeared to have been made in the windows of the main entry door. An officer counted five holes and three pea-size marks on the door that had missed the window. The damage was most likely made by a small caliber gun or pellet ammunition.

Tuesday, Sept. 9

3:09 p.m. A Cortez Police officer responded to the Colorado Welcome Center for a report of an active fight. A man was found sitting on the table in a gazebo with trash all around him. He told the officer that a woman was mad at him and throwing stuff at him because, “The stew didn’t have meat.” When the woman was contacted and asked why she was throwing stuff at the man, she yelled obscenities and wouldn’t not stop yelling. She was arrested for disturbing the peace and for possession of alcohol in the park.

Wednesday, Sept. 10

11:18 a.m. An officer observed an older blue Dodge Ram pickup near the 10 block of West Main Street with a licence plate belonging to a tan Ford pickup. The pickup pulled over near the 10 block of East Main Street. When the officer asked the 19-year-old driver why the license plate on his truck didn’t match, the driver replied that he had borrowed the plate from a friend to get to school. The officer informed the man that he would have to tow the truck because of a fictitious plate and no license or registration. The whole time, the 19-year-old was very nervous. As the 19-year-old started to take out his belongings, he also removed a small Sentry Safe. The officer asked what was inside the safe, and the man said “personal items.” The officer asked if it would be OK if he had a K9 conduct a “free air sniff,” to which the 19-year-old responded, “If you’re going to take my drugs, you’re going to have to pay for it.” The K9 officer responded and alerted positive to the safe, which was admitted into evidence. The 19-year-old was free to go, his vehicle was towed, and a search warrant was submitted to search the safe.

Wednesday, Sept. 10

5:16 p.m. An officer responded to the duck pond near the Park Da Vida for a report of a male urinating on a tree. A man matching the description was found sitting on a park bench. When asked if he had been urinating on a tree, the man denied it and added, “Who ratted me out?” When dispatch ran the man’s name, it was discovered that he had a warrant, so the officer arrested the man. The man was also cited for the possession of alcohol in a park.

Saturday, Sept. 13

3:29 p.m. Police arrested a man for assault and domestic violence after he allegedly told a woman “I will kill you. I am going to get the knife.” The man also alledgedly tackled the woman.

Sunday, Sept. 14

12:09 a.m. Two officers observed a Harley Davidson motorcycle laying on its right side in a driveway. Next to the motorcycle was a guitar smashed in multiple pieces. When officers tried to investigate, they heard a woman yell “He called the police, I can’t go to jail.” When the woman saw the officers, she began yelling at them, “Just take me to jail.” She was arrested and placed in handcuffs and in a patrol car. While the officers were talking to others about the incident, the woman slipped out of her cuffs and was hitting the partition in the patrol car. She was placed in handcuffs again. A neighbor said that the woman was witnessed smashing the guitar on the motorcycle and screaming. The woman was allegedly at a local bar and left and called the owner of the motorcycle at least 20 times because she believed he was attempting to cheat on her. The woman was taken to jail for domestic violence and criminal mischief.
