Looking back to my birth year

I turned 80 in July, so thought I would look and see what was going around that time in 1934.

Ray Allen of Mancos has brought in specimens of high grade ore from the West Mancos. There is every reason to believe that the value will exceed $10,000 per ton.

Roger Owens has returned to his claims at the headwaters of the West Mancos river.

The 4th of July celebration has come and gone and upwards of 5,000 visitors thronged the streets of Mancos. The Rodeo was a good one, the ball games were well patronized, tea boxing was all that could be asked for and the dances and movies furnished entertainment for a great many visitors.

Mr. and Mrs. Emery Wagner, who have been spending their vacation in Mancos, departed for Pagosa Springs.

Several large forest fires have been raging for the past two days in Mesa Verde National Park. About 275 men have been used to get them under control.

A sneak thief pried open the door of Frank Stubbs' car Tuesday night and carried off fishing tackle, cigarettes and other items.

Tuesday July 24th is Mormon Day and the LDS Have arranged a fine program which will be carried out at the L.D.S. Chapel, Boyle Park and a dance at the Mancos theater.

John Dillinger, arch criminal, was killed last Sunday in an encounter with federal agents and policemen as he was leaving a Chicago picture show.

James Westley Sheek, the year-old son of Wiley Sheek, was accidentally drowned in a partly filled boiler of water at their place in East Canyon.

Superintendent Leavitt, of Mesa Verde National Park, informed this office that $45,000 is available for graveling and oiling ruins and headquarters roads.

Mrs. Eva Brittain has gone to Chama to visit Mrs. Kate Sheek.

Mancos again defeated the Cortez tennis players in a matched game here last Sunday. The Mancos players were Herman Wagner, Nat Mahan, Robert Beers and Miles Mahan. Robert Beers in a single set defeated Dewey Brown 6-4.

Charging fraud, H. L. Whipple a Mancos prospector, has filed an action in district court for one-fourth interest in the 22 claims comprising the rich Red Arrow gold mining properties. Defendants are the Red Arrow Gold Corporation and Charlie Starr. Many thousands of dollars worth of gold has been taken out of the Red Arrow tunnel.
