Roughly two months into the fall prep season, few area athletes have been as impressive as Montezuma-Cortez High School soccer star Manual Martinez.

Just a sophomore, Martinez has consistently impressed with his ability to find the back of the net, scoring six goals in his team’s first five games.

Thanks in large part to Martinez’s contributions, M-CHS is off to its best start in several years, winning three of its first five games.

“Along the way we’ve been making progress since our season last year,” said Martinez.

Asked what has allowed him to score so effectively this season, Martinez was quick to credit his teammates.

“Our midfielders, Jesus (Ruiz) and Aron (Engle) and our wingers, Parker (Bell), Skylar (Yarbrough) and Andrew Laymon have been crossing the ball and I’ve been able to put it in.”

After scoring a team-high five goals last season, Martinez worked hard over the summer, playing in several tournaments and pickup games.

“I usually go over to play tri-city and do some camps,” said Martinez. “I also make a travel team down in Monticello with my cousins. We travel up to Ignacio and to Aztec.”

Listing his favorite subjects as Algebra and history, Martinez said that he would like to attend college and possibly play soccer.

Between now and graduation however, Martinez plans to focus on helping the M-CHS soccer team advance to the postseason for the first time in several years.

“We want to make it to the playoffs and keep getting better,” said the sophomore. “We just want to win.”
