Continuing to show improvement under second-year head coach Brett Martin, the Montezuma-Cortez High School softball team split a doubleheader with Delta on Sept. 6.

Struggling to score runs in the first game of the doubleheader, the Panthers fell behind early and never recovered, falling 16-5.

M-CHS rebounded in the second game of the two-game slate however, scoring early and often in route to a 13-12 victory. With the win, the Panthers improved to 3-3 on the season.

Keying the victory was the offensive performance of junior Journi Black, who went 3-4 at the plate.

“I can’t say enough about a .750 batting average,” said Martin. “Journi really hit the ball well that second game.”

Also playing a role in the victory for the Panthers was junior Tayla Topaha, who pitched a solid seventh inning to lead M-CHS to victory.

“I have to give Tayla Topaha a lot of credit,” said Martin. “She finished out the last inning with some crucial strikeouts.”

Next up for the Panthers will be the Delta Tournament, which will take place in Delta, Sept. 12-13.

“It has been a long time since we’ve been 3-3 as a softball program,” said Martin while expressing excitement about the upcoming tournament. “I’m really proud of the girls.”
