CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) — State authorities are investigating a police shooting which left a 28-year-old man dead and a 20-year-old man in his car wounded in southern Colorado on Saturday night.

Two police officers fired shots while attempting to make contact with the driver of a car near a motel on U.S. Highway 50, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation said in a press release Sunday. The agency, which said it was asked to investigate the shooting by police, said the shots were fired “at some point during the incident” and that the circumstances of the contact and the shooting were under investigation.

The 20-year-old man who was also in the 1999 Infiniti is expected to survive, CBI said.

The name of the man who died has not been released.

Canon City police announced early Sunday that officers were involved in a shooting but did not provide any other details, other than no officers were injured. The department said CBI would be the primary agency investigating the shooting and referred further questions to the agency.
