DENVER (AP) — Authorities have launched a search for the person who threw a small dog out of a moving vehicle while on a highway in northeastern Colorado earlier this week.

The Jefferson County sheriff's office responded to a witness report on Tuesday around 1:45 p.m. that a dog was thrown from a black sedan on Interstate 76 before Sheridan Boulevard, KMGH-TV reported Tuesday.

Witnesses told police it appeared the miniature poodle was deliberately thrown. Authorities said the dog was taken to Foothills Animal Shelter in critical condition where it later died.

The sheriff's office has urged anyone with additional information to call police.
