Country Girls to hold reunion Aug. 23
The Country Girls Reunion will be Aug. 23 at the Lewis-Arriola Community Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a potluck at noon.
All families and friends of The Country Girls are welcome.
In the mid-1950s some young farm and ranch wives in Montezuma County met monthly and would host meetings in their homes.
As their offspring played together, The Country Girls, planned family activities and service projects. New brides were welcomed with a bridal shower and invitation to join The Country Girls. Members were honored with baby showers. These offspring now have children and grandchildren of their own, and the families all share a very special bond and are eager to share their 50 years of happy memories.

Blair to discuss edible plants
From thistles to choke cherries to dandelions, learn how to find and prepare edible wild plants in our area with Katrina Blair, edible plant expert and co-founder of Turtle Lake Refuge.
This free walk will take place along the Colorado Trail on Wednesday, Aug. 27, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and is sponsored by San Juan Mountains Association and San Juan National Forest.

Historical society plans membership meeting
The annual membership meeting of the Montezuma County Historical Society will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, , at Cortez United Methodist Church, 515 N. Park St., in Hampton Hall.
After the business meeting,there will be a program featuring local author Mike K Maddox. Mike’s recently published book Porter and Ike Stockton, Colorado and New Mexico Outlaws will be presented.
Maddox is a graduate of Colorado State University, and is retired from the New Mexico State Park system. He lives in the Animas River Valley of northeast New Mexico.
His book features family stories that have been researched and tied together for the first time. The books will be for sale.
All programs are free, and the public is invited. There will be refreshments and a book signing.

Mushroom excursion planned Aug. 23
On Aug. 23, John Sir Jesse will lead a small group near Lizard Head Pass on a mushroom-hunting excursion.
Learn about mushrooms, their habitats and edibility. The group will meet at 8:30 a.m. about an hour north of Cortez. Participation is limited and registration is required. Call 970-728-0639.
This trip is rated for wildflower and mushroom enthusiasts.
The group will stroll the woods to gather a number of mushroom species and then will drive to Jesse’s house to feast on them. If you plan to attend the dinner after the mushroom gathering, be sure to bring a potluck dish (homemade fare such as breads, salads, soups, deserts) to accompany the mushrooms.
Wear hiking boots. Be sure to bring lunch, several liters of water and rain gear. Bring a small soft brush for cleaning mushrooms and several large cloth bags (such as old pillow cases) for carrying the mushrooms you collect.

Dolores Quilters to host biennial show
The Dolores Mountain Quilters Guild is pleased to announce the 2014 biennial quilt show which promises to be an exciting showcase for local quilting artistry. The show will be held at the Dolores Community Center on Friday, Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The show will feature over 100 quilts, which will be judged by the public in six different categories. A quilters’ boutique will offer many handmade gifts and treasures, door prizes will be drawn each hour and raffle tickets will be for sale on a stunning king-size quilt “Homeward Journey.” Several vendors will offer fabric, patterns, notions and sewing machines. Tickets are available at the door for $3 per person for those 16 years and older.
Entries should be pre-registered and will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Entry registration forms are available at doloresmountainquilters.org.
Visitors and non-members are welcome to attend the guild’s monthly meetings held on the first Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Dolores Community Center.
Church gearing up for rummage sale
The Montelores Catholic Community will hold their Annual Rummage/Yard Sale on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5 and 6, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, on the corner of Montezuma and Market streets in Cortez.

4-H Group to offer poultry slaughter class
The Montezuma Valley Farm Hub and the Montezuma County 4-H Poultry Members are offering a Poultry Slaughter class on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 8 to 11 a.m.
Hands-on participants will take home a processed broiler chicken raised by 4-H Poultry Club members. Class size is limited to 10 participants and 10 observers, and preregistration by Aug. 21 is required. The cost is $30 for hands-on participants and $15 for observers. Proceeds will go to Montezuma County 4-H Poultry member activities.
