Melissa and Matt Reid weren’t using fertility medications or even trying to have more children, making the birth very rare.
“They weren’t planning on a pregnancy, they were trying to prevent,” said Diane Brown, Melissa’s mother.
Now more than a week after the birth, the Reids are still at the University of Colorado Hospital, and the whole family is healthy.
“She and the babies are doing great,”said Diane Brown, Melissa’s mother.
Melissa already has five children: ages 11, 9, 6, 5 and 18 months. When the couple found out they were expecting quadruplets Melissa said she was shocked and a little scared. As a result of the pregnancy they decided to move from Nevada to Dove Creek to be closer to Melissa’s family for support. Melissa is from Idaho, but her mother is a Dove Creek native and has strong family ties in the area.
The new additions to the family included boys Ryder Lee and Kamden Chad, and girls Aela Ann and Brinlee Diane. She said she found the first names on the Internet and all the middle names are in honor of family members.
“All four came out pink and crying and are doing great,” Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist Dr. Meghan Donnelly told CBS in Denver.
According to CBS, “Baby A,” Ryder Lee, made a bold entrance into the world.
“I was sitting there and I felt him come out and the doctors were freaking out because they weren’t expecting that, you know,” Melissa told CBS.
“Mr. Ryder didn’t want to wait for us,” Donnelly said.
The family expects to coming back to Dove Creek soon and Melissa said she said she expects bringing the babies home to be a life changing experience.
She said she did not expect an outpouring of donations from the community but she greatly appreciated it.
"We live in a wonderful community and my family is a great support system," she said.
Donations for the family are being collected at the Dolores County Fair, Friday through Sunday.
After the fair, donations including diapers and other baby-care items can be dropped off at the Dolores County Extension Office in the Dove Creek courthouse.
