George Geer Memorial Car Show

The Southwest Chapter 2 of Blue Star Mothers join Cortez City Councilman Ty Keel to sign a proclamation for the George Geer Car Show.

The fourth annual George Geer Memorial Car show revs up this weekend to benefit local families of American service members.

A pre-registration party, including a burn off contest, kicks off at Angel's End Zone on Friday starting at 5:30 p.m. The car show is held at Centennial Park in Cortez from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Sponsored by Southwest Chapter 2 of Blue Star Mothers, the car show features multiple categories, including pre-'50s stock and street rods, modern muscle cars, low riders, motorcycles and more. A trivia contest and honor walk are also planned.

A $25 preregistration fee is available until Friday, Aug. 8. Same day registration is $35.

The event is held in honor of Army Spc. George Geer, who died Jan. 17, 2005, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his position in Iraq. Just 27 when he died, Geer was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Infantryman's Badge.
