Letter to the Editor: Five years to grow hemp?

Wait just darn minute! Our government sent our local hemp testers seeds with around 80 percent viability?

I have never seen any crop with such dismal growth rates. OK fine. So instead of pot or hemp I propose the much more viable opium poppy. It can grow from Alaska to Patagonia, and we have a ready supply of seeds that are 98 percent viable. Not only that, but these are high-grade medicinal quality, grown in Tasmania. Also the sap derived from opium poppies, if not made into heroin, is far less addictive than the pills we all know and love.

Everyone can own their own high-grade opium. It's really simple. Buy a bag of poppy seed bagels or hamburger buns. I am not sure what laws would be violated if those seeds were to accidently fall off or some how be scraped off into someone's garden. I am certain some Monsanto-like corporation would charge you for patent infringement.

My point is for over 20 years it has been easier to get your hands on medical-quality opium than hemp that couldn't get you high if you tried. And it doesn't seem like it's changing any time soon. Glad our county has priorities. Just not sure what they are.
