John Kuykendall parades out with his buddies before the start of last year’s demolition derby. The derby is 7 p.m. Saturday at Montezuma Speedway.

Generally speaking, county fairs do not feature twisted auto bodies, smoking engines and non-stop car smashing action.

At this year’s Montezuma County Fair, all those things will be present however, during the eighth annual Demolition Derby.

Set to take place at Fairgrounds Speedway on July 26, this year’s Derby will feature numerous cars and several local drivers will participate.

Cars will be auctioned off in a Calcutta auction and prize money will be presented to individuals who bid on the winning cars.

A youth footrace will take place on the infield and audience members will also have the opportunity to smash a car with a sledgehammer for a small fee.

“(The Derby) is a family friendly event,” said event organizer Brent McClain. “It’s always a lot of fun.”

The gates at Fairgrounds Speedway will open at 6 p.m. and the event will begin at 7 p.m. General admission tickets cost $10, pit passes cost $20 and children under the age of 8 get in free.
