Come Back to My Valley: In 1989, modern snow travel, a new menu, an old foe

The beginning of the year 1989, 25 years ago, is the focus this week.

There have been reports of snowmobilers disturbing the peace with loud exhausts in the 700 and 800 blocks of W. Railroad.

Nicki and Willie Elmore and daughter, Rae Jean, avoided the heavy snow fall by going to Yuma, Ariz.

Airman Julie Randles, whose former guardians are Mr. and Mrs. Bill Ryter of Mancos, has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Julie is a 1988 graduate of Mancos High School.

Memorial services were held at the Mancos United Methodist Church on December 27 for Jack Allum. Jack was born in 1910 and died at the age of 78.

The school menus appeared in the paper. On Monday January 16, it was salad bar, hamburger on bun with catsup, mustard and pickles; oven French fries; chilled fruit and milk.

Gary and Susie Small have proudly announced the birth of their daughter Tiffany. The maternal grandparents are James and Doris McCabe.

Jack and Mary Ann Ott have proudly announced the birth of a grandson, Logan Ott, born to Larry and Peggy Ott.

Due to extra cold weather residents are advised to let faucets run a little to avoid freezing of waterlines overnight.

Winners in the National Geography Bee included Kaelan Yeomans, Haleigh Yeomans, April Schamp, Randan Robb, Matthew Weaver and Aaron Mykytuick.

Members of the 19898 Mancos Days Association Board of Directors included Roland Hobbs, Gary Small, Karen Fitzgerald, Laura Schamp, James McCabe and Lola Roberts.

The Mancos Lotto terminal hasn't arrived at the P&D Grocery, but Pete Loyd said it is expected later this week.

Some of the early rural water company founders were present at the annual membership meeting. They were Harry Halls, Wes Potts, Noland Alexander and Lloyd Doerfer. (The only one still living is Noland Alexander.)

Eric Decker was named Student of the Month for December by the Cortez Elks Lodge.

Athletes of the week were Elecia Smith, Bob Bangs, Pat Garcia and Misti Montano.

Edna Ruby Fitzgerald died at her home in rural Mancos on January 18 at the age of 83.

Mountain lions have killed half of Irene Doerfer's flock of sheep (24 out of 48) during the past year. This week alone three were killed and four in another.
