Come Back to My Valley: 1964 was a year to remember in the valley

I'll move to 25 years ago next week - 1989 that is. For now I'm in 1964.

Mrs. Cyril Conway and new daughter Loren are home after being released from the hospital in Durango

Jim Holston found his white horse in his pasture shot and dead.

Word has been received of the death of Frank Wheeler, a longtime resident of Mancos. He was fatally injured when he fell 40 feet from a church steeple where he was working.

Mr. and Mrs. James Fitzgerald have announced the engagement of their daughter Edna Louise.

Susan Barrett has won a 4-H sweater for selling the most tickets in the recent 4-H hunting gear ticket sale.

A wee bit more progress came to Mancos last week when the paving of the two and a half miles of the Webber Canyon road was completed.

Maurine Ellis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Ellis, who is employed in Washington, D. C., phoned her parents and told of watching the procession of President Hoover's funeral cortege up State Street.

Word has been received that captain Darrel Ellis and family, who are in Turkey, are well after a spell of Hepatitis.

Vern Eshelman, Mrs. Clarence Everett, Mrs. Jim Holston, Linda Everett, Mrs. George Mauler and Karl Holston attended the 4-H leadership meeting in Cortez.

Cyril Conway passed away in a devastating plane crash. His wife stated the work and programs Cyril started in the Mancos schools will continue.

The Baptist church presented their Christmas program under the direction of Mrs. Bill Crader.

Mr. and Mrs. Oen Noland and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Noland and children have gone to Crescent City, California, where they will spend the Christmas season.

Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Sheek and family have left for Plain View, Texas where they will spend Christmas.

Linda Willis won the Voice of Democracy supervised at Mancos high school by Mrs. Allen Snair.

The Christmas lighting contest saw first place won by Jack Ott and second by Jim Holston.

Mr. and Mrs. Willis Hurst and family have left for Idaho, where they will visit with relatives.

Phil Bauer, 81, died Monday in the Community hospital in Durango. Surviving are his wife, Esma, and five children.
