Chimney Rock in southern Colorado is the most northern and eastern ancestral Pueblo site of the Chacoan world. Chimney Rock has long been interpreted as a frontier of Chaco, concepts developed from contemporary views influenced by the American frontier experience. Recent archaeological theory is redefining that idea.

On Friday at 7 p.m. in Aztec Ruins Visitor Center, archaeologist Michelle Turner will lecture on this subject, revisiting traditional interpretations of Chimney Rock and reconsidering it as a place where indigenous traditions may have persisted alongside Chacoan ways. Her research will enlighten the audience about Chimney Rock as a locale of creative development that may have had a profound influence on Chacoan society.
