Paving road work suspended near Cortez

Colorado Department of Transportation contractor Skanska Civil USA West Rocky Mountain District Inc. is suspending paving work on Colorado Highway 145 from Cortez to Dolores until late July.

The contractor has encountered additional work on a separate project near Pagosa Springs and will resume work on Colorado Highway 145 on July 21.

Prepaving activities have been completed near County Road P, and the project will resume in July with additional milling of the roadway in Cortez, followed by paving of the entire stretch between mile point 0 and 9.4. Motorists are asked to maintain the posted speed limit of 40 mph at County Road P.

United Blood Services will host these blood drives:

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at First Methodist Church, 515 N. Park in Cortez.

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 19 at Walmart, 1835 E. Main St. in Cortez.

1:30 to 5 p.m. July 23 at the Southwest Memorial Hospital, 1311 Mildred St. in Cortez.

Noon to 5 p.m. July 29 at the Dolores Riverside Center, 400 Riverside Ave., Dolores.

Town to host free golf clinic

A free golf clinic will be held July 21 in Boyle Park from 8:30 a.m. to noon for kids 7 to 17 years old.

Jim Fiala will cover putting, chipping and other skills. Lunch and golf clubs will be provided.

This program is a nonprofit organization funded through the Hillcrest Junior Golf Foundation, which helps to introduce kids to the game of golf throughout the Four Corners area. Preregistration is required by July 18 at 12 p.m. Contact the rown of Mancos at 533-7725 and leave your child's name, age and phone number.

Horse center to offer volunteer training

Medicine Horse Center will hold a volunteer training from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 21 at its Mancos Center.

Medicine Horse needs people who are interested in leading or side-walking next to riders of all ages with disabilities. Volunteers are needed at both the Mancos and Durango facilities; this training applies for both locations.

Maverik opens along U.S. 160

Maverik opened its new location in Cortez last weekend.

The gas station on the corner of Colorado 145 and U.S. 160 is about double the size of the Maverik on North Broadway, said a company representative.

The Maverik is one in a string of new area projects, including a rebuilt McDonald's, a new O'Reilly's, a hotel and a dental clinic.

Shop specializes in event planning
