Sutcliffe Vineyards’ Syrah has received a score of 90 out of 100 in the July issue of the Wine Enthusiast magazine.

The variety was crafted by owner John Sutcliffe and wine maker Joe Buckel, formerly of the Flowers Vineyard and Winery in the Sonoma Valley.

Sutcliffe Vineyard’s Syrah was produced using grapes grown locally in McElmo Canyon and Canyons of the Ancients vineyards.

Buckel says the local grapes add distinct character to the Syrah and provide a unique regional offering to oenophiles looking for a “vine to glass” wine experience.

“From tiers of black cherry and ripe plums to dark chocolate and soft cinnamon finish, our syrah has all the weight and depth one should expect from this wonderful grape,” Buckel said.

In 2010, Sutcliffe Vineyards earned national recognition for scoring a 90 for a merlot variety.

Sutcliffe Vineyards is located in southwest Colorado’s McElmo canyon at the base of Sleeping Ute Mountain. Their wine varieties include Roses (needs dash over e), Chardonnays, Cabernets, Merlots and Syrahs. Sutcliffe wines are showcased alongside the regional cuisine at the vineyard’s sister properties at Dunton River Camp and Dunton Hot Springs, as well as at select top-end restaurants around the country.
