FARMINGTON – The Farmington Police Department is searching for an 18-year-old man suspected of stealing a vehicle in front of a woman’s home.

According to a news release issued Wednesday by the Farmington Police Department, a woman reported her car had been stolen from her driveway on the morning of Jan. 28. The release says the woman left her car with the engine running to warm up, and when she returned about four minutes later, the car was gone.

“Officers scoured the area but were unable to locate it,” the release said.

That same afternoon, a San Juan County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted the stolen vehicle.

According to the release, Alex Arnold, 18, of Farmington, the identified driver, tried to get away from the deputy. A few minutes later, a Farmington Police Department sergeant saw the car run a red light and “driving recklessly,” according to the release.

The sergeant attempted to pull the car over, and when it came to a stop in an apartment complex parking lot, Arnold and a female passenger fled in opposite directions, according to the release.

Officers were not able to find Arnold, who has a warrant on suspicion of receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle; resisting, evading or obstructing an officer; tampering with evidence; possession of burglary tools; and other charges.
