Cortez police officers and firefighters responded to a two-car crash on the 100 block of South Sligo Street about 1 p.m. Tuesday.

According to Cortez Police Department Lt. Andy Brock, a Kia was struck by an individual driving a Lincoln in the back door as it was headed north on Sligo Street. An 11-year-old child was in the back seat of the Kia.

The child was transferred to Southwest Memorial Hospital to be checked for injuries.

A total of four people were in the Kia. The damage to the vehicle was moderate, Brock said.

No court summons or tickets were issued. Police did not suspect that drugs or alcohol were a factor.

“There aren’t a lot of accidents out there, but it is a really busy intersection,” Brock told The Journal.

Police were in the process of acquiring video from a nearby dental office that might shed light on the accident.

The Cortez Fire Protection District and a Southwest Health System ambulance were among the first responders on the scene.
