Two men escaped uninjured after a fire started in the basement of a house at 477 East Fourth Ave. early Monday afternoon, and quick action by firefighters kept the blaze contained to the basement.
“We jumped on it pretty quickly, and crews got it knocked down,” said Durango Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Randy Baker, the incident commander.
The call came in at 1:04 p.m. and 21 firefighters responded with two engines, one ladder truck, two medic units, one battalion vehicle and one emergency medical service vehicle, Baker said.
The men who where home at the time of the fire declined to speak to The Durango Herald.
Baker said an investigator was in the house Monday to determine the cause of the blaze.
