Competing at the Colorado State Track and Field Championships in Lakewood, Colo., May 15-18, several members of the Montezuma-Cortez High School track team performed well.
Leading the way for the girls team was junior Rachel Demby, who, adding another outstanding finish to a season full of them, crossed the line seventh in the 400-meter dash (59.97).
Also performing well for the Panthers, sophomore Tayla Topaha finished ninth overall in the discus (112 feet).
On the boys side, the Panthers were represented by senior Keegan Ralstin, who, competing in his final high school track meet, finished 17th overall in the 300-meter hurdles (41.47).
“Keegan had a great year. He worked hard and did a great job.”
The boys team also enjoyed solid results in the 4x400-meter relay as Randy Haley, Justice Ramos, Josh Ramos and Ralstin combined to finish 15th overall (3:31.47).
“I would say it was a great year for those 4x400 kids. It was a great year for them. We celebrate the wins as we get them and this year (our 4x400) had quite a few.”
Although the Panthers will lose Ralstin to graduation, the team’s future looks bright as several talented underclassmen are set to return next season.
“Next year could be a banner year in track and field if we get all the kids out. Our freshman class is really tough and they’re only going to get better. We’re going to be strong.”
