Two days into the Colorado State Track Championships, the Dove Creek High School girls track team sits fifth overall in the Class 1A rankings.

With several big scorers set to hit the track tomorrow, the Bulldogs appear to have a shot at the state title.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs so far, senior Madison Young has been spectacular, finishing first overall in the shot put (36 feet, 4 inches) and third overall in the discus (106 feet, 10 inches).

Young’s performance in the shot put was especially special considering that the senior’s throw set a new Class 1A state record.

Also performing well for the Bulldogs, senior Jessica Guynes finished seventh overall in the 800-meter run (2:34.37), and senior Kristin Knuckles finished 11th overall in the 3200-meter run (13:53.12).

Two Dove Creek relays also performed well as the 4x800 relay composed of Kristin Knuckles, Cortney Ogas, Shelbie Knuckles and Jennifer Fury finished sixth overall (11:15.29), and the Sprint Medley relay made up of Kris Johnson, Savanna Ayers, Kiera Baughman and Fury finished seventh (2:06.21).

With one day left in the three-day meet, Dove Creek sits just 13 points behind current meet leader Shining Mountain Waldorf High School.

Competing on May 17 for the Bulldogs will be top-ranked hurdler Corissa Guynes, hurdler Shelbie Knuckles and the team’s 4x100-meter relay.

Corissa Guynes will compete in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and 100-meter dash, while Knuckles will compete in the 100-hurdles.
