Bears solid thus far at state meet

Through the first two days of the Colorado State Track and Field Championships in Lakewood, Colo., several members of the Dolores High School track teams have performed well.

Leading the Bears on May 15, sophomore Larissa Umberger finished 11th in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 17.49.

Also performing well on May 15, Brianna Schwartz finished 16th in the 100 hurdles (17.97) and Olivia Wright finished 18th in the 400-meter dash (1:03.50).

Two Dolores relays also competed on May 15 with the girls 4x200 relay made up of Kelly Charles, Taylor Elder, Wright and Schwartz finishing 10th (1:51.05) and the girls spring medley relay made up of Elder, Wright, Umberger and Charles finishing 12th (1:58.25).

Pacing the Bears on May 16, Taylor Elder finished 15th in the long jump (14 feet, 8 ½ inches).

("Elder) scratched on her first two jumps," said Bears head coach Nick Kohler. "She got worried on her third jump and took off way behind the line."

Also competing on May 16, Brianna Schwartz finished 15th in the 300 hurdles (50.39), and Kelly Charles finished 18th in the 300 hurdles (53.35).

On the boys side, the 4x100 relay made up of Tristan Holgate, Damien Marquez, Jackson Vermule and Ruben Gomez finished 16th overall (48.44).

"They're doing fine," said Kohler assessing his team's performance thus far. "Nobody has made finals, but we've run some really good times."

Competing for the Bears on May 17 will be the girls 4x400 relay made up of Charles, Elder, Wright and Schwartz and the boys 4x200 relay made up of Ethen Upton, Mikeal Ford, Rylan Huff and Guy Wallace.
