Panthers runners crack Top 3 at Pine River meet

For the Montezuma-Cortez High School girls and boys track teams, another week yielded another set of Top 3 finishes.

Leading the way for the boys team at the Pine River Invitational in Bayfield on April 19, Justice Ramos finished first in the 400-meter dash (52.76).

Also recording a pair of top-three finishes for the Panthers was Josh Ramos, who finished third in the 400 (54.73) and third in the 800 (2:20.14).

Other Panthers who finished in the top three in individual events included Victor Perez, who finished second in the shot put (40 feet, 10¼ inches) and Elijah Vaquera, who finished second in the long jump (18 feet, 6¾ inches).

Several Panthers relays also performed well, including the 4x100-meter relay composed of Isaac Padilla, Briston Walker, Seth Long and Vaquera, which finished first overall (47.67).

The Panthers’ 4x400 meter relay made up of Padilla, Long and the Ramos brothers also finished first (3:39.19).

“Having all the kids together is the big thing right now,” said boys’ head coach Bob Archibeque.

“With baseball wrapping up soon, it looks like we’re going to have those kids for the remainder of the meets,” he said.

Girls score Top 3 finishes

Pacing the M-CHS girls’ team as she has all year, Rachel Demby finished first in the 100 (13.17), first in the 200 (26.71) and first in the 400 (1:01.02).

Also breaking into the top three for M-CHS was Weslie Kirks, who finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (18.42) and third in the triple jump (30 feet, 5 ¼ inches) and Amy Campbell, who finished second in the 200 (27.87) and third in the 100 (13.54).

Starring in the throwing events for the Panthers was Tayla Topaha, who finished second in the discus (103 feet) and second in the shot put (28 feet, 10½ inches).

Next up for the Panthers’ teams will be the Montrose Invite, which will take place in Montrose on April 25.
