Kindergarten enrollment is April 29

Mancos Elementary will be holding open registration for kindergarten April 29, starting at 5:30 p.m. The open house is a great opportunity to meet the teacher, principal, and other staff. In addition, you will have the opportunity to meet other parents and kindergarten students.

If you have not already provided the school your child's name, call 533-7744. We will be creating information packets for each family.

Students need to be 5 years old on or before September 15, 2014 to enroll in kindergarten. Mancos School District has a full-day kindergarten program.

Town starts researching marijuana laws

The town board directed the town administrator on April 9 to begin researching Marijuana regulations that could be put in place if the local ban on recreational marijuana sales is allowed to expire in June.

Most board members, including members elected April 1, voiced support for moving toward lifting the ban on recreational marijuana because of the potential to increase sales tax.

"I think we are going to lose if we wait on this whole thing on the financial side," said Trustee Will Stone.

The town voted in overwhelming support to allow the town to impose a flat fee of up to $10 on the sales of recreational marijuana. The fees would not impact medical marijuana.

The Town Marshal John Cox voiced his opposition to allowing the moratorium on recreational marijuana to expire because it is still illegal under federal law. He also expressed concern that the medical marijuana facility in town had not yet been inspected by a state official.

"My position is against retail marijuana sales in the town of Mancos because there's too many unanswered questions," he said.

The Town Administration Andrea Phillips said she would present draft regulations concerning a local flat fee and regulations in May.
