After a somewhat slow start to their season, the Dove Creek High School boys and girls track teams appear to be rounding into form.

Combine that with the fact that several weeks remain in the high school track season and several Class 1A competitors around the state of Colorado are most likely getting nervous.

Boys’ team enjoys solid results

One of ten teams competing at the Abel Velasquez Invitational in Bayfield on April 12, the Bulldogs’ boys’ team enjoyed its finest results of the season.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was senior Taylor Hankins, who, showcasing top notch speed and impressive endurance, won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.54.

Also performing impressively for the Bulldogs was senior Nick Jones, who finished fifth in the 100-meter dash (12.24) and fifth in the long jump (17 feet, 7 3/4 inches).

Other Bulldogs placing in the top ten included junior Chance Randolph, who finished seventh in the 400 (59.14) and eighth in the 200 (25.74) and Case Baughman, who finished sixth in the 300 hurdles (49.02).

Girls continue march toward state

Not to be outdone by their male counterparts, the Dove Creek girls’ team also put together an impressive performance at the Abel Velasquez Invitational.

Leading the way for the girls’ team was super-senior Madison Young, who finished first in the shot put (33 feet, 5 inches) and first in the discus (104 feet, 10 inches).

Also recording a top finish for the Bulldogs’ girls’ team was Corissa Guynes, who crossed the line first in the 100 hurdles (17.42). Corissa Guynes also finished second in the 100-meter dash (13.68).

Other Bulldogs placing well were Shelbie Knuckles, who finished second in the 300-hurdles (53.37) and Kristin Knuckles, who finished third in the 800 (2:55.69) and sixth in the 1600 (6:33.48).

Next up for the Bulldogs’ track teams will be the Ron Keller Invitational, which will take place in Durango on April 15.
