Insurance agency opens on Main Street

KB Insurance Group opened on Main Street in February in the former home of the Jewel Box.

Ken Brengle left Aaron’s to become an agent associated with FUSA Insurance Agency and offers farm, life, house, business and car insurance.

FUSA is owned by the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union.

District Manager Jeff McGimsey said he was pleased the agent found a home for his business on Main Street.

“If we could have told him to put it anywhere, we would have told him put it here,” McGimsey said.

Annual Easter egg hunt is April 19

The annual Easter egg hunt sponsored by the Cortez Rotary Club will be held Saturday, April 19 on the west side of City Park, near East Montezuma Avenue and North Park Street.

Areas will be marked off for groups of children ages 3 years and under, 4-6 years and 7-10 years. Children may begin assembling at 9:30 a.m., and the hunt begins at 10 a.m.

This year, children will hunt for plastic eggs filled with candy or coins.

Parents are encouraged to bring cameras and arrive on time – the eggs go quickly.

Dolores Seniors to host donation sale

While spring cleaning, put aside the unwanted bric-a-brac, crafts, knick-knacks, books, and forgotten artwork and bring them to the Dolores Community Center.

The items will be sold as part of a White Elephant sale to raise money for the Dolores Senior Citizens.

“Our funds are running low to cover our activity costs, so this is a way people can help,” said Marilyn Volm, secretary-treasurer.

The sale takes place every Wednesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dolores Community Center.

A White Elephant sale is a rummage-sale tradition where a buyer donates what he or she thinks the item is worth.“There are no prices, just give what you can,” Volm said. “We’ve found people are more generous when they come up with the price. Plus, we don’t have to put price stickers on everything.”The sale coincides with the senior lunch. Drop off donated items between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. Volm adds the sale targets spring cleaning, which always unearths long-forgotten, but valuable items people may want to donate instead of having a yard sale.

“We brought in some books, coffee cups, a purse,” says Dolores resident Jeane Koenig. “Everyone has stuff they don’t need, just sitting in boxes.”

Seminar to address guardianships, more

Taking over the legal and financial responsibility as a legal guardian or conservator for another can seem daunting.

The fastest rowing population is those older than 65 years old is leading to an increased number of those in need of these services, said Holly Bock, the adult protection caseworker for the county.

“It’s a very slowly expanding need,” said Patch the protective proceedings monitor for the local courts. He handles cases that involve children and adults.

To address this need, Patch is holding a free seminar Tuesday covering the duties and responsibilities, immunities and liabilities of conservators and guardians.

The seminar will also cover proper reporting procedures including the filling out of forms, proper service to other interested parties and supporting documentation requirements.

Patch’s position was created 19 months ago to oversee the local guardianships and conservatorships and he helps review required annual reports to the courts. The first half of the seminar will cover guardianships and the second half will cover conservatorships.

The seminar will be held Tuesday at the Montezuma County Courthouse, 109 W. Main in room 106 from 6-8 p.m. For information contact: 970-564-5051 or richard.patch@judicial.state.co.us.
