Candidate forums will help voters decide on candidates in the Nov. 3 election.

Two candidate forums are on the horizon in Montezuma County.

On Sept. 23 at 7 p.m., the Montezuma League of Women Voters will host an online forum for Montezuma County Commissioner District 3 candidates. The candidates are unaffiliated Rebecca Samulski and Republican Joel Stevenson.

The weblink to access the forum will be posted soon on the League of Women’s Voters Facebook page.

The District 3 race is the only contested race in the county, so only those candidates were invited, said Karen Sheek, president of the Colorado Chapter of the League of Women Voters.

Judy Schuenemeyer will be the moderator.

She will ask each candidate a series of nonpartisan questions related to the duties of serving as a commissioner. Sheek said suggested audience questions may be submitted on the League of Women voters webpage or Facebook page.

On Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. the San Juan Basin Farm Bureau will host a Meet the Candidates Night at the Montezuma County commissioners room.

All the candidates representing Montezuma County have been invited, said organizer Dorothy Porter, even if they are running unopposed.

Invitees include District 3 commissioner candidates Samulski and Stevenson and District 2 commissioner candidate Kent Lindsay, who is unopposed; 22nd Judicial District Attorney candidate Republican Matt Margeson, unopposed; Colorado House of Representatives District 58 candidates Democrat Seth Cagin and Republican Marc Catlin; U.S. Senate candidates Republican Cory Gardner and Democrat John Hickenlooper; and District 3 U.S. Congress candidates Democrat Diane Mitsch Bush and Republican Lauren Opal Boebert.

“I hope they all show,” said Porter.

The format will be all audience questions with a moderator, she said. The idea is to have a back-and-forth discussion between the candidates and citizens on local issues and ideas.

“The only requirement is that the conversation and questions be polite and civil,” Porter said. For more information, call 970-565-8640.
