Mrs. Leonard’s fourth-grade class at Mesa Elementary recently wrapped up a project in which students learned about writing letters to the editor.
The class read and analyzed the Cortez Journal’s Opinion page for a couple of weeks to learn about persuasive and opinion writing and decided to let the Cortez area know some of their opinions.
Each student decided on an important thought or issue to write about.

More hours in a day
We should have two more hours in a school day. One reason I feel we need more hours at school a day is that we need to learn more about writing, punctuation, and reading. Another reason is that we need to have more science, social studies, and math time. We could learn how machines work in science and do more experiments, learn about history, and work on more math. Finally, we could have more specials time. We could have more music, PE, and library. We could even add an art class. Now you know why we should have two more hours in a school day. By the way, I am just a nine-year-old boy and I WANT two more hours in a school day.

Art is awesome
We should have art class during specials at school. First, art is creative. We all think differently with art and drawing. Second, we will be excited for school and our brains will be ready for school. Next, we have time on Friday. Our schedule wouldn’t be so confusing because on Fridays we do not know where we are going. We could be going to Music, PE, PBIS, or Library. If we had art class, we would go to art! Finally, we need an art teacher. It would hopefully be Mr. Rainy. We like him a lot. It’s important to have art in school because it is a creative way of thinking. We should defiantly have a weekly art session at Mesa Elementary.

We should have art class during specials at school. The first reason why I want art class at school is because kids will be excited for school. It would be really fun at art class because you would get to draw, make crafts and paint. Another reason that I want art class is to have a fundraiser. We can collect money and sell a lot of pictures. The last reason why I want Art class in school is because we can learn about the history about Art. We can learn about the famous people that like to do art. We can learn all the famous drawings that the famous people have drew for the art Museum. These are the reasons why I want Art class in our school.

I believe we should have art class for Mesa Elementary. Art is fun to do and it is good for us because we could learn about art history. It helps us learn to figure out how to make sculptures, maybe of a bird. Then, when we go to another class like reading, we don’t get tired as easily and we can focus more. We have an extra day on Fridays. We have specials on Friday, like one Friday is music and the Friday would be P.E. We should have art on Friday because it’s an extra day that is available for art class. That is why we should have art class at Mesa school.

We should have art in school because we would be more creative. Kids’ brains are working hard to think of what to draw. Art is creative for the students. We have time on Fridays to do art. On Fridays, we have time during specials to add an art class. We all have different thinking and we are not the same people, so students will have different drawings, pictures, and crafts. We should have art in school because we all think differently and all the kids need to be able to be creative.

A very dangerous job
One reason police need a bigger pay check is because it is very dangerous job. Sometimes police get shot or almost killed. Bad people try to shoot them or hurt them. Next, many cops work long hours and do not get home till late which means they don’t have any time for their kids and family. Some police barely can pay their bills because they do not get enough money. This proves police need a bigger pay check, when they don’t even have enough money to live on. We definitely need to pay cops more money for their time and arrests, and just willing to be in dangerous situations and ready to die for others. I know what cops do because my dad is a cop. Being the son of a cop makes me worry and pray that he does not get killed because I know there are dangerous people out there. Police need a bigger pay check. You know this is true. Please help give the police more money for their time!

Art class
We should have art class during specials at school. First, everyone will be excited for school because it’s fun, and there’s lots of drawing, crafts, and painting. Next, we could have a fundraiser and sell pictures to collect money for our school art supplies. Finally, art is creative. We all think differently; we all should be able to use our imagination in art class. There’s lots of history in art too. We can learn about famous artists. These are the reasons why I truly believe we should have art class during specials at school.

Shouldn’t you get paid for working in dangerous situations?
Law enforcement officers and fire fighters should get paid more money for their work. They work really hard. Law enforcement officers save lives and fire fighters often put out fires and save lives too. They also risk their lives. Firefighters have to run into burning buildings, when others are running out. Law enforcement officers get shot at and have to deal with dangerous situations. Our town needs to pay our law enforcement and fire fighters more money. We could have more fundraisers, ask for more donations, or maybe even our town should re- consider the budget. It is important to me that the law enforcement and fire fighters get more money because they are always risking their lives for others.

We should have art class during specials at school. First, it gets kids excited for school because it’s fun and because it’s a hands-on experience. It exercises your brain because it’s a creative process. We have time on Friday because we change the specials we have on Friday. I wish the art teacher would be Mrs. Bane from the high school. It’s important to have art class because kids have different ways of thinking and we should have a chance to be creative.

We should have Art class during specials at school. Art would make kids get very creative. Like sketching, or drawing. You could learn about the history of art, like famous paintings. Kids could try to sell their paintings to people to buy art supplies and toys. Art class should be on Friday. I would want art in school because it is a very good learning experience.

We should have art class during specials at school. Kids need to be creative with art. Kids need a creative side. We have lots of learning time doing math, reading, and science and social studies. We need a time to be creative, doing art. We will have time on Friday. We do not have a routine special on Friday. So now, we will not get confused on what specials we have. We will have art! Also, it will be fun for the kids to learn about art history. We can paint a portrait, or re-create a painting from the past. It’s important for us to have art class in school because we think in different ways and could have a way to be creative.

We should have art class during specials at school. Who would the teacher be? It hopefully would be Ms. Bane from the high school. When would we have art class? We would have art class on Friday during specials because we have time. Also, we don’t have a normal Friday routine. We would have fun and be creative. We are all creative. We all learn and think differently. We would be excited for school since some kids hate school and art class would change that because it’s so fun. I truly think we should have art class during specials on Friday because we all think differently, and need a way to express ourselves.

We should have art class during specials at school. Then everyone will be excited for school. The children will have fun. The children will do crafts, painting and drawing. After that we can have a fundraiser. We will sell pictures for money for the school and collect money for the classes. We will be creative! It is true that we all think differently. In art history, you can draw Indians from a long time ago as well as study famous artists. I think that we should have art. It’s important because it will support children, so we can be creative.

We should have art class during specials at school. I think we should have art because it would get students excited for school. Art would inspire us to be an artist when we grow up. Plus, it would be creative and get students to learn hands-on creativity. It would get us thinking in creative ways. Some students learn that way. We would have time to do art on Fridays during specials. We don’t have a regular Friday routine, so it would be a perfect time to add an art class. We would love to have Ms. Bane as our art teacher. This is why our school should have art. It would guarantee many students could be creative and it would be exciting and stimulate our minds.
