Two meets into their season, the Dolores High School boys and girls track teams are putting together some solid performances.
Girls hurdlers set pace
Competing against 12 other teams at the Piedra Vista Invite on March 15, the girls' track team performed well, finishing eighth overall.
Pacing the Bears for the second consecutive meet was senior Brianna Schwartz, who finished fourth overall in the 100-meter hurdles (17.94) and fourth overall in the 300 hurdles (54.61).
Also hurdling well for the Bears was sophomore Larissa Umberger, who finished 10th in the 100 hurdles (19.91) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (55.84).
Other top-10 finishers for the Bears included Olivia Wright, who finished fourth in the 400-meter dash (1:08.50) and ninth in the 100 (13.69); Taylor Elder, who finished third in the long jump (15 feet, 10 1/4 inches) and ninth in the 200 (29.73); and Jessica Schleisser, who finished sixth in the discus (81 feet, eight inches).
Discussing the results, Bears head coach Nick Kohler appeared pleased with his team's progress.
"As a group, they all did well from the first meet from the second," he said.
Boys gain valuable experience
Finishing dead last in a 13-team field at the Piedra Vista Invite, the boys team left plenty of room for improvement.
A few Bears performed well however, including Rylan Huff, who finished 20th in the 200 (26.75) and 24th in the 100 (12.40).
Other top finishers for the Bears included Damien Marquez, who crossed the line 23rd in the 200 (26.87); Trevor Robinson, who finished 27th in the 400 (1:02.94); and Jackson Vermule, who finished 32nd in the 100 (12.82).
"They're having fun, and that's the key," Kohler said.
Next up for the Bears will be the Aztec Ice Breaker, in Aztec on March 21.
