Matching up against Grand Junction Central on March 15, the Montezuma-Cortez High School girls’ soccer team played well for long stretches.

Against Southwest League opponents, the Panthers have to be perfect however, and due to a few key slipups, M-CHS suffered a 4-1 road loss.

“I’ve got a lot of young girls playing in some key positions,” said Panthers’ head coach Nathan Ross after the loss. “They’re playing really well, but they don’t yet have the experience to be effective against these 5A schools.

Providing the biggest highlight on the day for the Panthers was sophomore Gabby Wolf, who, after making a long run down the left side, beat two defenders and the goalkeeper to score her team’s loan goal of the game.

Also playing well for the Panthers was senior Kenna Tarr, who delivered several pretty passes in the midfield.

“She’s the glue in there and she’s playing really well,” said Panthers’ head coach Nathan Ross of Tarr.

With their record now at 0-1-1, the Panthers will take a brief respite before a home matchup against Durango on March 22.

“Moving forward, defensively, we need to keep our shape and formation,” said Ross. “A lot of times, we’re getting out of position”
