A 73-year-old Durango man is in critical but stable condition after being struck by a vehicle in the south City Market parking lot Monday morning.

Durango Police Department Cmdr. Ray Shupe said Robert Morris, 87, of Durango was shopping at City Market, 6 Town Plaza. He got into his 2010 Subaru Forester at about 9:40 a.m. and mistook the gas pedal for the brake and accelerated out of the parking spot, Shupe said.

The car then struck a pedestrian, identified as Michael McGuffey. The car then hit three other vehicles before stopping.

McGuffey was taken by helicopter to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood. Shupe said he was in critical but stable condition.

The three other vehicles sustained moderate to severe damage, Shupe said.

Morris was cited with careless driving causing injury. Drugs and alcohol were not suspected factors in the crash, Shupe said.
