The grandstands began to fill up for the country music concert Friday evening at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds.

More than 500 fans enjoyed country-rock bands Overton Road and Little Texas at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds Friday night.

The concert in the outdoor arena kicked off the county fair and was the first major local event since the coronavirus hit in March.

The crowd in the stands cheered as the music started, and people spilled out onto the arena where country dancing began in earnest.

“So glad they put this on. It’s great to get out of the house and enjoy a nice concert outdoors,” said Marco Blackhorse, of Cortez.

Kids played tag, danced and did cartwheels across the arena floor. Chairs were provided for anyone wanting a view upfront.

“It’s a really great moment to experience. Everyone is unwinding from all that’s been happening,” said a man in a USA hat.

For the first time at the fair, beer sales were available at the fair exclusively for the concert, and business looked swift. Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office deputies walked through the crowd, and the mounted patrol kept an eye on the parking lot.

Event volunteer Dani Traweek said 200 tickets were sold in advance. The venue can hold several thousand people, she said, but attendance was to be capped at around 2,000 as a coronavirus precaution.

“We have plenty of room here to spread out,” Traweek said.

Mask wearing was recommended, but not prevalent among the attendees. Social distancing could be seen in the stands.

Headliner Little Texas fired up the crowd with energetic songs, and said they were excited to be back on the stage after so many concert cancellations.

“Cortez could use a party tonight. It’s great to be here,” the frontman said.
