Modern replicas of the Fab Four British invasion will crank up retro tunes at the Dolores Community Center on Friday, Feb. 28.
The benefit concert featuring "Dr. Robert: the Beatles Tribute Band" will help pay for upgrades at the community center.
Local jazz funk band Afrobeat Minions will open the show at 7 p.m..
Admission is $10. This is an all ages show. Kids 12 and under get in free.
Promoter Heather Narwid, of Nice Lady Productions, is well known for throwing festive winter theme parties at her Dolores store, Sideshow Emporium. But lack of space led to hosting an event at the Dolores Community Center instead.
"It's a beautiful, roomy space that is really under utilized," Narwid said. "The Beatles music is so accessible for everyone. It will be a safe, fun event for kids and older adults who grew up with 60s pop music that is still relevant today."
Dress to impress in your best retro and vintage '60s and '70s garb. There will be a bar with beer and wine, and a signature cocktail called Twist and Shout for those over 21. Sweet and savory baked goods will be available from the Pie Maker.
There will also be a street-style show for anyone to strut the stage in their fabulous retro 1960s-1970s outfits with prizes for best-dressed.
The show is a benefit to raise funds for more sound improvements in the Dolores Community Center. High ceilings and lots of glass creates an echo during film and music events.
The solution is locally grown, explained Marianne Mate, community center board member. A type of stretched-fabric tile will be installed on the walls to help baffle the sound. The unique tiles are being made by the Dolores Mountain Quilters and will be reversible to facilitate the type of event. One side is printed with artistic designs and the other will have more muted colors.
Do not miss this unique concert experience, Mate advises, adding it will be a safe, family atmosphere for kids and adults. Parents: no need to get a sitter.
"Get ready to Twist and Shout. It's been 50 years since the Beatles were in America, and now they've returned," she said.
Dr. Robert and his band perform the Beatles pretty much straight-up traditional, but they add their own electronic flourishes.
"Every show is catered to what the audience wants. If they want to dance, we drive towards that," said band member Kevin Reinert. "We play two long full sets and perform 40 to 50 songs. There are the popular songs everyone knows, but we play some of the deep tracks only a few will recognize. It's always different, but it is always Beatles!"
