KSJD broadcasters want to make the community’s ‘dry land radio’ station wet with alcohol, applying for a municipal liquor license.
KSJD executive director Jeff Pope filed the request on Feb. 7. It’s assumed the liquor license request was made in preparation of opening the station’s new community theater, but attempts to confirm were unsuccessful as of press time.
The station’s request would be required to pass muster with neighbors as required by state statutes. At tonight’s 7:30 city council meting, officials are expected to set a March 25 public hearing on the matter.
City officials have recommended approving the liquor license request, adding that station managers have passed all required background checks.
The city also considers amending an agreement to enable education officials to seek a construction grant. Additional funding is needed to build athletic facilities at the new M-CHS site.
Stipulating reasonable public access to the new athletic fields, the city would serve as a grant facilitator only if the amended agreement was approved.
“The city of Cortez would not be funding any portion of the project,” City Manager Shane Hale wrote in a recent memo.
If approved, the school district would be for providing matching funds for the $350,000 Great Outdoors Colorado grant. Voters approved a 2012 bond issue to construct the new school.
In other financial news, the public works department tops tonight’s city council agenda with the purchase of a new John Deere front-end loader for $155,710 and awarding a $53,671 crack sealer bid to JFW Equipment.
In a joint effort with other agencies across Montezuma County, the city also weighs a total of $113,666 in individual bids for water treatment chemicals. An ISC $52,343 bid to upgrade the city’s Cisco telecommunications system is also up for approval.
