Cortez Public Library has announced additional virtual writing workshops.
Philip Duke, retired professor of anthropology and author, will teach a workshop on “How to write historical fiction” from 10 to 11 a.m. July 11 via Zoom.
Duke has published two novels of historical fiction — one set in Crete and the other in Colorado – and is at work on the third. Duke’s workshop is based on his own extensive research and writing experience. He will look at the major issues and opportunities facing the writer of historical fiction, using his novels “A Terrible Unrest” and “The Village” as models.
Annette McGivney, author and award-winning journalist, will teach a workshop on “you can’t make this stuff up: How to write creative nonfiction” from 6 to 7 p.m. July 15 via Zoom.
McGivney is the author of “Pure Land,” which won the 2018 National Outdoor Book Award. She is also the longtime Southwest Editor for Backpacker magazine. McGivney will share wisdom and skills she has gained during three decades working as a journalist writing narrative magazines articles and books. Genres touched on will include memoir, outdoor adventure and true crime.
