LETTER TO THE EDITOR Volunteer Fire Department provides lessons for life

When I was 16, two of my best friends and I joined the Mancos Volunteer Fire Department as junior members. When it started, it was something cool to do, it allowed us a way to "wear cool gear," "play with fire" and "ride in cool fire trucks."

However, for us, it soon became so much more than that. After every call and every meeting, it became less about being labeled as a firefighter and so much more about brotherhood, family and helping others, and I know it all had a huge impact on the people we are today. Now three years later, the three boys who joined the department have grown up and graduated high school, started their lives with different dreams and separate paths. Looking back now, I am so very thankful for what the fire department has done for us.

After my years as a volunteer, it became my dream to pursue firefighting as a career.

I was lucky enough to know my passion early. I have started on a path to achieve my dream, and I owe it all to the men and women involved with the Mancos Volunteer Fire Department.

I have learned so much from every one of you, and I know I will carry these lessons with me forever. Now halfway through my first year of college, I often think of my brothers and sisters back home.

I want every member of the Mancos Volunteer Fire Department to realize the impact they have all made in my life, and I want to extend my most sincere thanks.

I ask the next time you see a firefighter take a moment, extend your hand, and thank them because to a volunteer firefighter those simple acts of gratitude is payment enough for the countless hours given. There are true heroes in our community!

I would like to give a special thanks to all of my brothers and sisters on the Mancos Volunteer Fire Department you truly are heroes!
