Emily Funmaker pulls down a rebound during a Bluejays win over Telluride earlier this season.

Experts at remaining competitive, yet searching for ways to win, the Mancos Bluejays girls basketball team has continued to improve during a rebuilding year.

Continuing a season-long trend of dropping close games, the Bluejays traveled to Ouray on Jan. 25 and, after battling for three quarters, let things slip away, losing 42-32 to the hometown Trojans.

Contributing largely to the loss was the Bluejays' inability to contain Ouray junior Jackie Sanders, who, continually attacking the rim, tallied a game high 21 points.

With the loss, the Bluejays fell to 2-8 on the year and 0-4 on the road.

Next up for the Bluejays will be what promises to be a tough home matchup against Norwood (Jan. 31) before traveling for to Telluride for a rematch against the Miners on Feb. 1.

No doubt, the Bluejays will look to replicate their previous performance against Telluride, which produced a 52-23 Mancos win.
