Stepping inside Heart and Core Yoga Studio, one is immediately struck by the power of the space. Soothing music cascades through the air, yoga mats spread over a smooth wooden floor and an ambiance unlike any other pervades the senses.

Owned by Jill Lawson, the studio feels different than a gym or recreation center, yet according to the longtime yoga instructor, offers some of the same benefits, in addition to many others.

“It’s refreshing for the mind and body,” said Lawson, who has been teaching yoga in the area since 2004. “It’s a little different than going for a run. It gives you a chance to slow down and I think in this life where we are so hurried…that’s the part that benefits people the most.”

Opened in April 2013, the studio currently provides space to nine instructors who specialize in various forms of yoga.

In no way age or experience specific, classes are available for individuals of all ages and abilities. According to Lawson, several young people currently practice at the studio, as do several senior citizens.

In addition to its weekly class offerings, the studio also offers a 200-hour teacher training program that prepares students to one day teach classes of their own. As part of the program, students are exposed to anatomy and physiology, yoga philosophy and ethics training.

While the $2150 cost of the training program may discourage some from attending the program, expenses are often paid back once graduates of the program begin teaching.

Seeking to provide a wholesome fitness experience, Lawson hopes that her studio can provide a means through which more area residents can become involved in yoga.

“I want to see more people benefiting from yoga,” said Lawson. “It’s great to see over the last nine years how many people are practicing on a regular basis. I want to see that keep going.”
