Speaking of how not to handle a virus ...

Our politics and our pandemic have had some unfortunate overlap, not least of which is Democrats and Republicans trading charges of politicizing all responses to the coronavirus – which perhaps just goes to show there is nothing that cannot be politicized. Why one would want to, like coating everything with a nice, thick coat of lead-based paint, is another question.

It was one to which Candi CdeBaca, the far-left Denver City Council member, proudly gave no thought when she retweeted on Feb. 28 a message from one Susan Daniel (@SuePersists) that said, “For the record, if I do get the coronavirus I’m attending every MAGA rally I can.”

CdeBaca added, “#solidarity Yaaas!!”

Predictably, Colorado Republicans called for her resignation.

Equally predictable, CdeBaca did not see what the fuss was about. “They were calling for me to resign before I got elected!” she told Colorado Politics. “If they are indeed worried about the severity of the coronavirus, then they should encourage our Republican president to take it more seriously.”

These are the kind of zero-sum politics we should expect when almost exactly half the country approves of the job President Trump is doing and the other half emphatically does not. But the tastelessness and lack of judgment all the way around may not go away, even if we ever again have a president who has the approval of most of the people. CdeBaca could start proving us wrong by apologizing.
