Paul Mattson with Mountain Hyperbarics in Durango and his daughter, Lea Mattson, died Monday after a head-on crash in Anchorage, Alaska.

The preliminary investigation found Mattson’s SUV slid into oncoming traffic and crashed into a pickup truck, according to an Anchorage Police Department report. Winter road conditions were believed to be a factor, the report said.

Paul Mattson died on scene. His daughter was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Lea Mattson died hours later Monday. Responders also transported two adults and one juvenile in the pickup to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Paul Mattson originally purchased a hyperbaric chamber, which treats conditions stemming from lack of oxygen, to provide treatments for his autistic son.

He moved to Durango after marrying Kicki Searfus, a primary care doctor at Mountain View Family HealthCare.

He brought his hyperbaric chamber to Mountain Hyperbarics, owned by George and Lori Ann Glass, and served as the firm’s technician and consultant.
