Bernie Sanders is assured the top spot among La Plata County voters in Tuesday’s Democratic presidential primary with all ballots counted except for about 460 from military members, overseas residents and some with signature problems.
Coming in behind the Vermont senator, with 40% of the vote, were former Vice President Joseph Biden, 24% of the vote; Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, with 19%; and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, 14%.
Elsewhere in the region:
Montezuma County reported Sanders with 42% of the vote; Biden, 24%; Warren, 16%; and Bloomberg, 15%.Dolores County reported Sanders had 42% of the vote; Biden, 22%; Warren, 16%; and Bloomberg, 14%.Archuleta County reported Sanders with 35%; Biden, 25%; Bloomberg, 20%; and Warren, 17%.San Juan County (Silverton) reported Sanders with 43%; Warren, 19%; Biden, 17%; and Bloomberg, 16%.While the results will not change in La Plata County, Clerk and Recorder Tiffany Parker said most of the 460 potential outstanding ballots have been mailed to people serving in the military or residing overseas, and if they mailed their ballots on Election Day, law requires their votes to be counted up to eight days after the election.
In addition, voters who turned in ballots without proof of ID on file with the Clerk and Recorder’s Office or people who turned in ballots without signatures or who have problems with their signatures have until March 11 to cure their ballots. If they come in and cure their ballots by the March 11 deadline, their ballots also will be counted.
This will be a busy election year for the clerk and recorder, who will handle the La Plata Electric Association Board of Directors election with mail-in ballots going out April 16. Ballots for the LPEA board election will be due on May 16 at LPEA’s annual meeting, which will be held at Pagosa Springs High School, 800 Eight St., Pagosa Springs.
Next up on the election calendar will be the statewide Democratic and Republican primaries on June 30 for all offices below president. Mail-in ballots for the June 30 primary election are expected to go out no later than June 12.
The general election will be Nov. 3.
The latest projections of the statewide delegate count in Colorado’s Democratic Presidential Primary Election, which will change based on continued counting of the votes, shows Sanders earned the largest haul at 28 delegates.
He was followed by Biden with 16 delegates, Warren with 13 Bloomberg with 10.
In the 3rd Congressional District, Sanders and Biden both garnered two delegates and Bloomberg was awarded one delegate.
