Confidence is high for the Dove Creek Bulldogs girls basketball team, and honestly, who could blame them.

Two weeks into the season, the team has won all three of their games while blitzing opponents with a balanced and diversified attack.

The latest team to fall victim to that attack was the Mancos Bluejays, who, hoping to capture the championship of the Bulldog Classic on Dec. 10, fell to the Bulldogs, 53-38.

After jumping ahead early in the contest, the Bulldogs fell flat, allowing the Bluejays to pull within a point, 14-13, on the strength of nine first quarter points by Bluejays’ senior Brittany Bundy.

“We jumped on them a little bit in the first part of the first quarter,” said Bulldogs’ head coach Jim Buffington. “They adjusted and made it a one-point game.”

Early in the second quarter, the Bluejays took a 15-13 lead before a Bulldogs run put Dove Creek ahead 27-19 entering the half.

Although the Bluejays managed to hang tight throughout much of the third quarter, the Bulldogs lead proved too much to overcome as Mancos eventually succumbed, 53-38.

Even with the lopsided final score however, Buffington could not help but be impressed by the young Bluejays’ team.

“Mallory Morgan has got those girls playing,” said Buffington of the Bluejays’ first year head coach.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs with a game-high 17 points was senior Jessica Guynes. Adding an additional 13 points and 11 rebounds was senior post Madison Young. Senior Corissa Guynes rounded out the Bulldogs’ double-digit scorers with 11 points.

With their record now at 3-0 on the season, the Bulldogs will look to continue their early season run against Monument Valley (Utah) on Dec. 12 before preparing for a road matchup against Dolores on Dec. 17.
